Hello Again...
Welcome to the fifth issue of Fifth Letter's email-based newsletter. You are receiving this message because you are a current client, business partner, or someone who has expressed curiosity in learning more about our studio. We hope you enjoy our occasional missives enough to pass them along to a friend or business associate. Conversely, feel free to unsubscribe at any time. We have made it very easy to do.
More Awards
Design competitions have been very good to us since our last newsletter. In fact, we found out that we have won awards from two well-respected publications as well as a book. Four projects (two logos, two printed pieces) were chosen by Graphic Design USA for inclusion in their upcoming American Graphic Design Awards annual, which will be hitting newsstands around the holidays. In addition, our "Extreme Barbecue" book produced for Chronicle Books will be appearing in Print Magazine's upcoming Regional Design Annual. And last but not least, one of our logos will be appearing in the next edition of the LogoLounge book series, due in bookstores next year.
The Gift of Gab
Charles and Ray Eames were what you might refer to as a "power couple" in design were they still alive today. Although Charles died in 1978 and Ray followed ten years later, their influence is still felt throughout the furniture, architecture, exhibit design, textile, film making, and graphic design fields, among others.
Elliot was asked to participate in a design event on October 10 celebrating the "Powers of Ten" movie and other landmark Eames achievements, working with a panel of furniture, interior, and graphic design specialists and historians to discuss how Ray Eames' work has helped to inform designers in different ways over the last half century.
Looking ahead, he'll also be participating in a conversation at the Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham on November 14. The topics of conversation will include a focus on the creative process and what employers look for when hiring young designers.
Design Spotlight
919 Marketing asked us to partner with them on their Help Wounded Tarheel Troops initiative, a program that supports wounded troops returning home and the hardships they and their families face. A group of businesses and nonprofits including Kerr Drug stores, a 164 store chain across North and South Carolina, and the American Legion, a not-for-profit community service organization, are all working together to raise both awareness and money for this important cause.
We worked to create two different marks for the Help Wounded Tarheel Troops initiative. This flagship mark (and derivatives of it) appear on a website, t-shirt, magnet, and a variety of other materials and is based on the idea of military supplies being labeled with stencils, as well as the arrangement of elements to remind the viewer of stars and stripes on a flag. Our secondary mark appears on magnets only sold in select Kerr Drug stores. The concept is the country providing the necessary healing for returning troops.
You can see both logos here, with the balance of materials to come very soon.
Closing Remarks
A big pat on the back to all of our clients, both current and new, who have been sending projects our way since our last newsletter. We're always working on fun projects and look forward to sharing the results once we've finished.
We enjoy the unique challenges and opportunities we're fortunate to have coming through our door, and the new friends we've been able to make in the process.
